The Most Flammable Everyday Items That People Use

Jun 4, 2021 | Fire Safety Tips

It is estimated that over 358,000 home fires occur each year. In many cases, these fires can be avoided. You need to be careful when you are using flammable items. The following is a list of flammable items.

Rubbing Alcohol

Rubbing alcohol is one of the flammable items in your home. It can easily cause a fire if it comes in contact with an open flame. That is why you need to keep rubbing alcohol away from high heat, open flame, and other flammable household items.

Aerosols

Aerosol is a propellant under pressure that is used to dispense some sunscreens, air fresheners, deodorants, and spray paints. If you are not sure about whether something contains aerosol, then it is a good idea for you to read the labels. Keep aerosols away from cigarettes, open flames, air vents, and heat sources.

Mattresses

You may not think about your mattress being flammable. However, it is estimated that 10,000 home fires are linked to mattresses. Most of these fires are caused by smoking in bed or using candles near the bed. Knowledge is the best form of prevention here.  Avoid all sources of open flame in bedroom areas.

Nail Polish

Acetone is one of the main ingredients inside most nail polishes. The vapor that acetone produces can travel in the air and come in contact with another flammable source. You don’t want to paint your nails or use nail polish remover when there is an open flame in your home.

Dryer Lint

Dryer lint caused 16,000 of the home fires that occurred between 2010 and 2014. Dryer lint can be ignited by over-heated dryer air that becomes trapped by full- or partial duct blockage. The best thing that you can do to prevent dryer lint fires is to clean the lint trap after each load of laundry.  Having the ductwork behind the dryer professionally cleaned once a year will also prevent blockage.

Cooking Oil

Over half of the home fires start in the kitchen. Cooking oils are one of the main causes of kitchen fires. One of the most flammable ways to cook is frying food in oil or using a deep fryer. Cooking oils have an auto-ignition temperature, above which the oil will ignite into open flame spontaneously.  Frying at low heat when possible, and always watching your food as you cook can prevent kitchen fires.
