School districts all over the country are working hard to improve the security of their facilities. Hardware upgrades are an important part of this process and must not be taken lightly. Each facility has a “standard” for hardware: typically the type and manufacturer of the locks and key system is set during the building design process. If wrong or inferior product is installed, it may negate the time and money spent to upgrade facility security.
When upgrades are unplanned and not budgeted, it is tempting to install products that do not follow the original hardware standard because of urgency or price considerations. But respecting the original standard is the only way to ensure that the quality and compatibility of the locks is consistent, and that helps protect students and staff.
