Class A rated extinguishers are effective on fires involving paper, wood, textiles, plastics and other ordinary combustibles.

Class B rated extinguishers are appropriate against flammable liquids, such as gasoline, oil, kerosene, or paint.
ENERGIZED ELECTRICAL EQUIPMENT
Class C rated extinguishers are suitable for fires in “live” electrical equipment and release non-conductive extinguishing agents.
Class D Fire Extinguishers
Class D rated extinguishers contain specialized extinguishing agents which are needed to combat combustible metal fires. Sodium chloride is a class D agent that is useful on most alkali metals including sodium and potassium, and other metals including magnesium, titanium, aluminum, and zirconium. Copper-based Class D agents are useful in combatting lithium fires. Most Class D fire extinguishers will have a special low velocity nozzle or discharge wand to gently apply the agent in large volumes to avoid disrupting any finely divided burning materials.
Class K Fire Extinguishers
COOKING OILS & FATS
Fires that involve cooking oils or fats are designated Class K fires. Though such fires are technically a subclass of the flammable liquid/gas class, the special characteristics of these types of fires, namely the higher flash point of cooking oils, are considered important enough to recognize separately, thus the need for Class K fire extinguishers.
