Did you know that portable fire extinguishers must be installed in all workplaces regardless of whether other firefighting measures are present? As an early response to a developing fire, the successful performance of a fire extinguisher depends on appropriate placement, proper maintenance, and trained users.
There are different Types of Extinguishers, each designed to extinguish a specific class of fire. They are selected according to the potential fire hazard, the construction and occupancy of the building, and the hazard to be protected.
All portable fire extinguishers must be approved by a nationally recognized testing laboratory such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL) or Factory Mutual (FM) to verify compliance with applicable standards. Extinguishers that pass their tests are labeled and given an alpha numeric classification based on the class and size of fire it will extinguish. Fire extinguishers use a picture labeling system (Pictogram) to designate which class of fire they can be used on.
